New Year's Resolutions & Doing Less

Strategy for the New Year:  Do Less

It is that time of the year again to make plans for the new year. In year’s past, my resolutions looked something like this: go to the gym more, run a marathon, learn Spanish, spend more time with my family, get out in the sailboat more… you get the idea.

More often than not, I would keep up these resolutions for a few months and then eventually drop them and walk around with a guilty conscience. But what I’ve realized is that in each case I was trying to do one more thing, in addition to all of the other things I was doing. Thus, I was adding more tasks atop my 168 hours a week already allocated to the many other things I have to do.

Thus, this year I have decided to take a different approach. I am doing less. I made a list of the things I do on a regular basis and prioritized them. I then crossed out the items on the bottom of the list so I was left with only the essentials - the things most important to me.

Since you have read this far, you must be asking what this has to do with business, strategy, technology, eCommerce,  digital marketing or any of the other things we usually talk about. Put simply, this article is about choices and what matters most to you and your business.

A big part of our process in working with clients on their eCommerce initiatives is making choices. Frequently, the timeline or budget will not allow us to accomplish everything right away. So, we prioritize based on the strategy and make choices about what functionality will go into each phase.

The end result is that we iteratively create the type of online experience that will achieve the most important business goals. In doing so, we can consistently test the strategy while staying within the timeline and budget allotted.

So, Happy New Year and try to do less this year. I think you will be more than pleased with the result.
